18th - 19th Century French Pair of Antique Gilded Bronze Couple Candlesticks

A gold-black, antique French pair of " Couples " candlesticks made of hand crafted gilded bronze, in good condition. Each of the detailed patinated bronze candle holders are composed with a cherub, Putti and Sphinx. Minor fading due to age. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1780 - 1800, Paris, France.

A putto, plural putti  (Italian), is a figure, character of a male chubby child. The putto represents the sacred cherub it also can represent a cupid. The Italian word comes from the Latin word putos, meaning boy or child.

Cupid comes from the Classical Greek Mythology, it means passionate desire, it is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. Cupid is often illustrated as the son of the love goddess Venus and the god of war Mars.

A Sphinx comes from the Accent Greek Mythology, it is a mythical creature with a head of a human and the body of a lion with wings of a falcon. In the Greek tradition, the sphinx has often a head of a women.
