19th Century Pair of Tuscan Commodes Arte Povera
A pair of 19th Century Arte Povera Florentine Celestial commodes in legno laccato, circa 1860. The midnight blue painted cabinets have an all over pattern with ochre colored stars. It has two small drawers on top (key is provided) and two large drawers on the bottom. The top is painted in a wooden color. Wear consistent with age and use.
This type of furniture was handmade by cabinet makers starting in the 1500's through the 1700's. The furniture was in fashion but was fairly expensive, due to the choice of wood (walnut or cherry wood). Therefore, the artisans were asked to fabricate the furniture in a less expensive way using wood types such as Pioppo or Fir.
