20th Century German Vintage Bronze Figure of Mucius Scaevola by Wilhelm Kumm

A vintage bronze figure of a man Mucius Scaevola in cast bronze, Gladenbeck Berlin Foundry. The base is signed by the German sculptor Wilhelm Kumm ( born in Hamburg 1861-1939 ) "W. Kumm", in good condition. Mr. Kumm was offered to stay at the the Villa Strohl - Fern in Rom, which was offered to well known artists from the late 19th to early 20th Century by Alfred Strohl - Fern a well to do sculptor himself and philanthropist. Wear consistent with age and use.

Gaius Mucius was a Roman soldier leaning on a cauldron stand. He was imprisoned by King Porsena, who was stricken by the bravery of this young man when he held his right hand into the altar flames. The king released the soldier and called him Scaevola, which means left handed.
