Late 16th C. Renaissance Mantel Piece

An Italian surround or formal fireplace mantel from an antique villa near Verona, circa 1580. The flanking superbly carved wooden Ionic columns have been finished with a Venetian marble paint. The entire interior gilded dentil frame is set onto a double frame. This was faux finished in a green Venetian marble patina. The front of the surround has finely carved scrolling leaves on a green background. A light wood which was used during the Renaissance period for fine carving, original condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
