Pair of Anduze Garden Urns from Provence in Glazed Terra Cotta

pf-1603

A pair of small French garden planters hand thrown from the south of France. The French raised garden pots are traditionally decorated with swags and a crest. The beautiful, rich hand painted glaze adds to the charm of these ceramic clay garden ornaments. The size and finish may vary as they are handmade, not frost proof.

The iconic Anduze urn traces its origins to the early 17th century, during the reign of King Henry IV. Inspired by the classical elegance of the Medici urn  from Florence, a French potter in the town of Anduze blended Italian Renaissance design with Provençal craftsmanship, creating the first hand-thrown terracotta urn in Southern France. Over time, the Anduze pot became a hallmark of French garden style, admired for its graceful silhouette, durability, and decorative charm.
