19th Century French Anduze Vase in Terracotta with Ancient Patina
pf-1638
This antique ceramic garden pot was hand thrown in Provence. The raised citrus pot in terra cotta features the iconic garlands, medallions or traditional Provencal motifs. The surface of this garden planter has a worn and weathered patina, reflecting centuries of exposure to the elements. Wear consistent with age and use.
The iconic Anduze urn traces its origins to the early 17th century, during the reign of King Henry IV. Inspired by the classical elegance of the Medici urn from Florence, a French potter in the town of Anduze blended Italian Renaissance design with Provençal craftsmanship, creating the first hand-thrown terracotta urn in Southern France. Over time, the Anduze pot became a hallmark of French garden style, admired for its graceful silhouette, durability, and decorative charm.
