Restored Pair of 20th Century Swedish Gustavian Pinewood Commodes

pe-1652

A beautifully restored pair of early to mid-20th-century Swedish Gustavian commodes, meticulously hand-crafted in painted Pinewood. These refined Scandinavian chests are characteristic of the Gustavian revival period, echoing the restrained Neoclassical elegance that defined 18th-century Swedish design.

Each commode is composed of three drawers - two generous lower drawers and a smaller upper drawer - offering practical storage while maintaining a refined architectural symmetry. The drawers retain their original metal hardware and working keys, adding to their authenticity and charm.

The façades are detailed with traditional Gustavian meander molding, a hallmark motif inspired by ancient Greek ornamentation. Subtle fluting and clean linear accents emphasize the understated sophistication of the style. The bodies rest on four short, tapered legs that gently lift the form, giving the pair a light, elevated presence typical of Scandinavian furniture.

Restored and newly hand-finished, the commodes display a soft, muted palette with gentle distressing, highlighting the natural grain of the Pinewood. Minor wear, faint scratches, and surface variations are consistent with age and use, contributing to their character.
