A 20th Century Blue Abstract Painting by French Painter Daniel Clesse
pai-1138
An abstract oil painting 1950’s with beautiful hues of blue from France.
Daniel Clesse (French, 1932–2016) dedicated his life to painting with quiet discipline and unwavering purpose. Together with his wife, Christiane Clesse, he built a life centered entirely around art; working nights at the post office so his days could be spent in the studio. For Clesse, painting was never driven by commerce. He intentionally chose not to sell his work during his lifetime, keeping his practice private, sincere, and deeply focused. Only after his passing has his remarkable body of work become available.
This abstract composition reflects the language Clesse developed over decades: confident, architectural brushwork paired with a restrained yet powerful palette. Layered fields of chalky whites, indigo blues, and ocean tones are built up with sweeping gestures and softened edges, while accents of blush and subtle red create tension and movement throughout the surface. The result feels both structured and spontaneous, like a memory of landscape, light, and atmosphere rather than a literal scene.
Painting without the frame.
