A collection of Eight Anthropomorphic Majolica attributed to Paolo Condurso, Seminara Italy circa 1920 - 1949
DEC-1856
A Striking Collection of Eight Vintage Mid Century vases, candleholders and pitchers in majolica terra cotta, entirely hand modeled and hand painted. Each of the items are individually glazed and vitrified. The items depict the expressive faces, rendered with lively characters and sculptural presences.
The ceramics by Paolo Condurso were influenced by the Sicilian production of Caltagirone and are known for their anthropomorphic and mask-like shapes. These objects held an apotropaic meaning, traditionally believed to ward off negative influences and protect the home from the evil eye while bringing a good future. An unusual and highly decorative object, equally suitable as functional objects or as a sculptural accent in a Mediterranean, eclectic, or folk art interior.
Condition consistent with age and use. Minor glaze wear and small firing imperfections typical of the hand made majolica. No structural damage observed.
