Bell jar light fixtures, also known as “smoke bell lanterns,” originated in 18th-century Europe and became widely popular during the 19th century. These elegant blown glass pendants first appeared in England before spreading throughout the English colonies and into America, where they were commonly used in entryways and foyers. Their distinctive bell-shaped glass enclosure was designed to protect candle flames from drafts while containing smoke, helping to prevent soot from staining ceilings. Traditionally crafted from hand-blown glass with metal fittings, these lanterns later evolved from candlelight to gas and eventually electric lighting, while maintaining their iconic form. This also features a decorative circular rim with a subtle wave pattern, adding an additional layer of craftsmanship and visual interest to the lantern.
