19th Century Italian Mask of Socrates in carved Carrara Marble

A late 19th Century, weathered antique mask of Socrates from Italy. He is the Classical Greek philosopher 470-399 BC. The head was hand-carved in white Carrara marble and had a wonderful antique patina. The marble head is mounted on an iron rod and stands on a square Rosso Verona marble base. In good condition, with minor fading due to age. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1860 - 1880, Verona, Italy. A similar head is seen in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
