Byzantine Style Limestone Wellhead with Scrolled Iron Overthrow
sw-1051
An antique circular wellhead in hand carved limestone with very detailed and elaborate animal carvings and chiseled Byzantine style (Medieval period in Europe). This is a typical example of a well which can still be seen in the Venetian region in Northern Italy. This garden ornament originates from a convent of the small island Isola di San Erasmo located in the lagoon of Venice. The beautifully hand forged wrought iron overthrow with decorative lateral scrolls, chain, pulley with hook attachment completes the wellhead. The garden ornament is set onto a 5” high circular platform. Antique weathered patina, wear consistent with age and use. Circa 20th Century, Northern Italy.
