Faux Bois & Cement

Faux Bois & Cement

Faux Bois refers to an artisanal imitation of wood, most likely first crafted by French rocailleurs garden craftsmen in the late 19th century through the 1940s. These structures were created using chicken wire, metal rods, and related armatures. Once shaped, a mixture of mortar, cement, and concrete was applied to the framework. While still wet, the surface was carefully sculpted by hand to achieve the realistic texture and character of natural wood. Because Faux Bois is formed from cementitious materials, many traditional garden ornaments and sculptural elements created in cement or concrete share a close relationship with this historic craft. Alongside classic Faux Bois seating and architectural pieces, we also carry a selection of cement garden items. Across the decades, cement has been used to create whimsical, distinctive sculptures and decorative outdoor forms; from playful ornaments to sculptural accents each offering durability, charm, and a timeless presence in the landscape.
