19th Century Italian Pair of Antique Louis XIV Pinewood Cabinets Arte Povera
pe-1825
An antique pair of Italian Louis XIV small commodes in legno laccato painted light grey with a brown ornamental pattern. The hand crafted Pinewood nightstands each have a single door with its original metal hardware and key, in good condition. The top of the cabinet is painted in a wooden color. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1880, Italy.
This type of furniture was handmade by cabinet makers starting in the 1500's through the 1700's. The furniture was in fashion but was fairly expensive, due to the choice of wood (walnut or cherry wood). Therefore, the artisans were asked to fabricate the furniture in a less expensive way using wood types such as Pioppo or Fir.
