An antique pair of Italian 19th-century sphinx statuettes handcrafted in terracotta, in good condition. The detailed Tuscan garden statues are laying on a volute base, and the wooden plinths are included. The sphinx is found in both Egyptian and Greek mythology. A sphinx or female sphinx is a mythological creature and often features the head of a human, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle. Minor fading, ships due to age. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1850, Tuscany, Italy.
When Napoleon Bonaparte launched the military campaign in Egypt, he was accompanied by scientists. After their research in 1802, a publication was released about the findings of unknown land. This resulted in a fashion called "Retour d’ Egypte", which was later replaced by the Empire style.
