Antique 16th Century Venetian Wellhead Carved in Marble

A massive antique marble garden wellhead is hand-carved in Istrian or Biancone marble. This impressive garden ornament is positioned on the original marble stone square step. The circular shaped wellhead is embellished by heavy scrolled Acanthus relieff the four edges and on two sides with décor on each o finely chiseled coat of arms. Decoratively carved doves are the symbol of marriage, the crest is dated 1521. Centuries of the weathered patina add character to the magnificent garden ornament. Wear consistent with age and use.

Wellheads have been fundamental elements in “Venetian” everyday life for centuries. The wellhead was used to catch a supply of fresh water. The catchment basin used to be architectural engineering which was very likely to be developed through the discovery of natural wells, shaping the collection of rainwater that was filtered and cleaned from sand. A similar water well is found in Campo Della Maddalena, Venice Italy.
