Antique 16th Century Venetian Wellhead Carved in Marble
A massive antique marble garden wellhead, is hand carved in Istrian or Biancone marble. This impressive garden ornament is positioned on the original marble stone square step. The circular shaped wellhead and is embellished by heavy scrolled Acanthus relief décor on each of the four edges and on two sides finely chiseled coat of arms. Decoratively carved doves are the symbol of marriage, the crest is dated 1521. Centuries of the weathered patina add character to the magnificent garden ornament. Wear consistent with age and use.
For centuries, wellheads have been fundamental elements in “Venetian” everyday life. The wellhead was used to catch a supply of fresh water. The catchment basin used to be architectural engineering which was very likely to be developed through the discovery of natural wells, shaping the collection of rain water that was filtered and cleaned from sand. A similar water well is found in the Campo Della Maddalena, Venice Italy.
