Late 19th Century Venetian Silvered Grotto Suite with Table, Bench and Four Chairs

PE-1964

An exceptional late 19th century antique Venetian grotto suite, consisting of a table, a bench and four chairs, crafted in the tradition of highly decorative seaside-inspired furnishings, in good condition. The surfaces retain their original silvered finish with a subtle brown overpaint, skillfully imitating the iridescent shimmer of marine life.

Each piece is supported by stylized oyster-form legs and enriched with sculptural shell elements. The seating forms feature shell-shaped seats and elaborately modeled backs, richly decorated with applied marine motifs, including seahorses and central starfish, further enhanced by additional shell ornamentation. The dynamic composition and organic forms reflect the period’s fascination with the natural world and coastal fantasy.

Such ensembles were produced by renowned Venetian workshops such as Pauly et Cie and Remi & Cie, inspired by the lagoon environment of Venice and intended for refined interiors, winter gardens, and seaside villas.

Founded in Venice in the mid-19th century, Pauly & Cie became one of the city’s most distinguished decorating firms, renowned for supplying opulent furnishings, mirrors, lighting, and decorative objects to aristocratic palazzi, grand hotels, and international collectors during the Belle Époque. The firm specialized in reviving the splendor of historic Venetian craftsmanship, often drawing inspiration from Rococo and Baroque models while embracing the theatricality and fantasy associated with the city. Grotto furniture of this type, with its exuberant marine imagery and sculptural character, reflects the fascination with the sea and romantic imagination that defined Venetian decorative arts of the period.

Restored, cleaned and gently refreshed. Wear consistent with age and use. Late 19th Century, Venice, Italy.
