Dixon Lantern
li-1385
Bell jar light fixtures, also known as “smoke bell lanterns,” originated in 18th century Europe and became popular in the 19th century. These stylish blown glass pendants originated first in England and spread quickly to the English colonies and America. They were used especially in entryways and foyers. Their bell-shaped glass enclosure protected candle flames from drafts and helped contain smoke, preventing soot from staining ceilings. Traditionally made of blown glass with metal fittings, these fixtures later evolved from candlelight to gas and eventually electric lighting while retaining their distinctive form.
