Antique French Anduze Garden Planter Pot in Terra Cotta

pf-1566

This antique hand thrown 19th Century Anduze planter has an antique patina reflecting the warm earth tones of Provence. This French garden urn in ceramic clay is decorated with handmade swags, medallions, and dark brown and green drip glaze. The Provencal garden planters are not frost proof and include drainage. Wear consistent with age and use.

The iconic Anduze urn traces its origins to the early 17th century, during the reign of King Henry IV. Inspired by the classical elegance of the Medici urn  from Florence, a French potter in the town of Anduze blended Italian Renaissance design with Provençal craftsmanship, creating the first hand-thrown terracotta urn in Southern France. Over time, the Anduze pot became a hallmark of French garden style, admired for its graceful silhouette, durability, and decorative charm.
