A Pair of 20th Century Barrel Garden Planters in Faux Bois from France

pon-1368

A pair of charming vintage French faux bois jardinières in the form of carved logs, in good condition. These decorative garden trough planters feature a realistic wood grain texture, and sculptural branch style legs. The surfaces display a beautifully distressed, weathered patina with natural tonal variation, enhancing their rustic character.

Perfect for use as planters for herbs, seasonal flowers, or trailing greenery, they also work beautifully as decorative accents in a courtyard or conservatory.

Wear consistent with age and use. Circa early 20th century, France.

Faux Bois refers to an artisanal imitation of wood, traditionally crafted by French Rocailleurs (garden craftsmen) from the late 19th century through the 1940s. These pieces were formed using wire and iron armatures, then hand-shaped with mortar and concrete. While the material was still wet, the surface was sculpted and detailed to convincingly resemble natural bark, knots, and wood grain. Wear consistent with age and use.
