19th Century Heroic Marble Head of Herakles with Lion Headdress

gs-1415

A monumental and masterfully sculpted 19th century copy of the famed Hellenistic "Herakles from Pergamon." This dramatic marble head, hewn from prized Greek Thassos marble, depicts the mythic hero crowned with the lion skin of the Nemean beast—an enduring symbol of strength and triumph. Minor fading, scratches due to age. Wear consistent with age and use.

With timeworn surface and noble expression, this piece channels the romantic allure of antiquity as rediscovered by 19th century travelers on the Grand Tour. Its powerful proportions and serene intensity are reminiscent of classical sculpture’s finest ideals.

Originally discovered in Pergamon (modern-day Bergama, Turkey), the Hellenistic original captured the imagination of artists and collectors for centuries, Pergamon, c. 2nd century BCE.  This 19th century replica reflects that enduring fascination—ideal for a collector of neoclassical art, a garden folly, or an interior steeped in myth and history.
