This pair of beautifully executed sphinxes were inspired by the style "Retour d’ Egypte". The sphinx is a mythological creature with a lion’s body and human head. The garden statues or ornaments are in reclining position and handcrafted in Tuscan terra cotta clay.

When Napoleon Bonaparte launched the military campaign of Egypt, he was accompanied by scientists. After their research in 1802, a publication was released about the findings of unknown land. This resulted in a fashion called "Retour d’Egype", which was later replaced by the Empire style.
