Set of Five Biedermeier Side Chairs in Walnut, Circa 1830

pe-1671

An early 19th century antique set of five Biedermeier dining chairs from Germany. Crafted from partly veneered walnut and finished in a restored, hand-polished surface. The warm walnut tones highlight the natural grain and fine period craftsmanship.

Each chair features an elegantly pierced open shield-form backrest with a detailed openwork central splat, finished with a distinctive shovel-shaped crest. The lower back is accented with small black-painted ebonized beams, and the chairs stand on tapering legs with straight aprons and refined proportions. Seat cushions have been newly upholstered in a fine black striped fabric.

Light fading and surface scratches consistent with age and use. Circa 1820–1830, Germany.

The Biedermeier style furniture originated in the early 19th-century in Austria and Germany. This period is defined by its elegant restraint and impeccable craftsmanship. With smooth silhouettes, minimal ornamentation, and luminous wood veneers, these pieces offer a timeless balance of form and function. Effortlessly adaptable, Biedermeier furniture lends warmth, grace, and understated luxury to modern and traditional spaces alike.
