Set of Four carved English Staddle Stones with a weathered patina

A set of four antique English staddle stones. Often called also stone mushrooms due to their shape. These limestone garden ornaments date back to the Medieval period and were originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks, game larders. The staddle stones lifted the granaries above the ground thereby protecting the stored grain from vermin and water seepage. In Middle English staddle, a foundation, support or trunk of a tree. They can be mainly found in England, Galicia, and Northern Spain. These stones make very nice and subtle garden ornaments especially to line either side of entrance drives. Nicely weathered patina, wear consistent with age and use.
Two sets of four staddle stones each are available.
