18th Century Glazed Terracotta Oil Barrel, possibly Saintonge
pf-1768
A rare antique French oil barrel crafted from the region’s beautiful local clay, these distinctive barrel-shaped vessels were crafted in Saintonge from the Middle Ages onward to store walnut oil, traditionally used for household lighting.
The master potters formed the vessel on a wooden wheel, creating a rounded, vase-like body before closing the top with a cork to achieve its characteristic barrel shape. The pronounced belly is crowned by a tall, wide neck and flanked by two sturdy handles. A traditional Saintonge green glaze covers the neck and handle bases, while the interior slip, or engobe, helped support the enamel and prevent the walnut oil from being absorbed into the porous terracotta.
With its sculptural silhouette, richly aged surface, and distinctive regional provenance, this exceptional vessel brings historical character to a collection of French country antiques.
