20th Century Triton Garden Sculpture in Limestone, Italy
sph-1091
As featured in the classical European garden architecture, a hand-carved limestone Triton garden statuary in the style of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Triton was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, the god and goddess of the sea in Greek mythology.
This 20th-century garden sculpture depicts a kneeling merman with a human body. The statue has horse-like legs and a large, scaled fishtail. The head is tilted back, blowing into a conch shell horn, which expels water into the air. Triton could either calm or raise waves while blowing through the conch shell horn. The left-hand presses a large Dauphin Grotesque tightly against the torso. This antique Italian garden ornament was used as a water feature. The original rectangular pedestal with bevels supports the sculpture.
