At the base of medieval Les Baux-de-Provence, the Carrières des Lumières turns an ancient limestone quarry into an enormous, 360-degree digital museum. Floor-to-ceiling projections launch light, movement, and music across towering rock walls, completely enveloping you in art.

From Quarry to Digital Canvas
The quarry’s pale limestone once built the ancient city of Glanum and the fortress of Les Baux. Formed millions of years ago from compressed sea fossils, this same stone became the discovery site of bauxite in 1821. Mining halted in 1935, leaving behind giant subterranean halls waiting for a second life.
In 1959, artists began using the cavernous Val d’Enfer space for light and sound experiments. Culturespaces took over in 2012, transforming it into the Carrières des Lumières. Today, synchronized visual systems sweep images across every inch of the stone, wrapping visitors in a continuous, multi-sensory display.
Picasso: Art in Motion
The Picasso show drives through the artist’s full evolution. Bright Spanish tones transition into the moody Blue and Rose periods before shattering into 360-degree Cubist forms like Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. The sequence peaks with Guernica, stretching stark black and white imagery across the high quarry walls to a dramatic soundtrack.
Frida Kahlo: Viva la Vida
The companion exhibition brings Kahlo’s world to life in full color. Huge self-portraits, botanical patterns, and Mexican cultural symbols cycle across the rock face. The textured stone gives extra dimension to her vivid artwork, amplifying themes of identity, pain, and resilience.
