The colorful light green shield is a heraldic cross, today used as a symbol of Occitania. This shield is not frost proof.
This symbol was first used by the counts of Forcalquier in their coat of arms in the 12th Century (in modern Provence), and by the counts of Toulouse as Marquises of Provence, on 13th Century coins and seals. It later spread to the other provinces: Occitania, Provence, Guyenne, Gascony, Dauphiné, Auvergne and Limousin.
